Personal thoughts
To be honest, judging by the first few pages of this novel I thought that the main story line would be about a child who encounters some ups and downs in his personal life, and the problems he will face will help him grow into a better man. I never expected this novel to be about a family and its scandals, which involves sexual abuse, assault and suicide. I learnt from this, never to judge a book by its cover.
This novel has also opened my eyes to the lack of respect towards the Indians. The amount of racism which occurred throughout the novel is astonishing and portrayed what it must have been like in American in the past.
On a personal level, reading this novel triggered my thoughts on the Australian Aboriginal people and their difficult history. There are a lot of parallels between those two native groups of people from two different continents.
